012 Bern & The Brights
video by: Kevin de Wilde
It was difficult to film Bern & the Brights in a couple of ways. The first being my hand’s tendency to tremble when I’m in an uncomfortable posture for too long. I make a terrible cameraman, I know. But their idea of using colorful glow sticks and cram themselves into their van was just too wonderful to not capture. I wanted to do a good job for them. Especially since I was really embarrassed to say that they’re fast becoming my favorite band overall having only started listening to them a couple of months ago. When they called me outside to start filming, I thought it would just be the three girls playing an acoustic set in the backseat. Christine opened up a flashlight and sure enough, Shawn and Jose were squeezed in the back with the bass and drums. Fun stuff. Very creative.
The second reason why it was hard to film was because they’re good. Absurdly good. I had already caught their live set at the Alfa Art Gallery before the shoot and I was still having trouble resisting the urge to just put down the camera and dance along. From Bern’s charismatic singing to Nicole’s gripping violin riffs, they were just a complete band that complimented each other so well that when you watch and listen, the music just erupts toward you like a single wave that will make you dance your ass off.
Bern & the Brights is definitely one of the best bands I’ve ever come across. I’m sure I’ll find myself in one or more of their shows in the future, camera in hand.
